When in office, what will you do to reduce harm and ensure there is social and economic equity for Black Long Islanders? If you are an incumbent, what policies/initiatives/laws have you supported that do this?
I am the representative of one of Suffolk's only minority-majority legislative districts, and I know first-hand the barriers our residents face. While good schools, workforce training and support for parents are some of the most important tools to support economic and social equality, I feel access to proper healthcare is just as important. This has been a major issue in my district, and it's a topic I hold incredibly close to my heart. Many of my constituents are stressed out, taking care of children and fighting to make ends meet. In these cases, taking care of your one's can easily fall on the back burner. I've helped bring mobile health cans for easy-access health screenings, farmer's markets with fresh produce, and I've worked with the Town of Babylon to help overhaul the communities only supermarket, which was falling into disrepair with limited food options. Supporting our kids and families is paramount to building a healthy community. In my first year in office, I formed the Suffolk County Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Task Force, to study the rates, trends and challenges facing our community with respect to pregnancy-associated deaths and the disparate impact on families of color in Suffolk County. I believe my role as an elected official is to ensure access to services for all, whether that is in healthcare, housing, or public safety, it all goes hand in hand.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know about your campaign?
I am a husband, father, former Sunday School teacher, former church board president, mentor, and community advocate. I am a third-generation African American who is a graduate of an HBCU. My core values are to serve and uplift those around me and to leave this world a little better than I found it. I've worked in the legislature in a number of capacities for over 10 years, and when I was first approached to run for office, I felt that it was not only my calling, but my responsibility to stand up for our residents, especially those whose voices have trouble being heard. I am seeking your endorsement to continue the work of advocating for our communities and creating opportunities for those who need the most help.
