When in office, what will you do to reduce harm and ensure there is social and economic equity for Black Long Islanders? If you are an incumbent, what policies/initiatives/laws have you supported that do this?
Throughout my years of public service, I have learned the importance of collaboration and inclusivity. My focus on engaging the community and bringing everyone to the table has been at the heart of my approach to effective governance. I am excited to continue this journey and would be honored to serve as the next Suffolk County Legislator.
As a longtime Riverhead teacher and former Riverhead Town Councilwoman, I have been a strong advocate for equity for Black Long Islanders in my community and within my entire region.
As a Riverhead Teacher, I fought for our school district to receive their fair share of state aid by lobbying state leaders in Albany through in-person visits, emails, texts and letters. I helped organize a regional rally to advocate for fair state aid for schools. I formed Riverhead School District’s Health and Safety Committee to address health and safety concerns of all employees in the school district.
As a Riverhead Town Councilwoman, I spoke up about the racial inequity within the town work force and worked to bring more equity to the town. I pushed for more diversity in managerial positions and on our town police force. As the liaison to the Riverhead Anti-Bias Task Force, I supported numerous programs promoting equity. Programs listed below:
• How Do We Build a More Just Long Island, Erase Racism event with Elaine Gross, 2018 • Riverhead High School Black History event, 2021 • Implicit Bias Training open to all residents, 2021 • Synergy event where the public met with the Riverhead Police Dept to ask questions, 2021 • Holocaust Remembrance event at local library, 2021 • LGBQ Pride Month 2021 • Film showing and discussion: National Loving Day, 2021 • Juneteenth Day event at Riverhead Library, 2021 • Bully Prevention Program 2021 • ABTF donated 35-40 books to Riverhead Public Schools on diversity, equity and Inclusion, 2021
As a Suffolk County Legislator, I will continue to champion our families by advocating for: • Responsible fiscal policies that hold the line on taxes and keep the cost of living manageable for all residents, including the creation of affordable housing through incentives secured from Albany. • Support for law enforcement and first responders, ensuring that they have the training and resources needed. • Bold environmental action to address climate change through a collaborative regional plan, and to keep our drinking water safe, and our bays, waterways and air clean for generations to come. • Safeguarding our farmlands and preserving open spaces by maintaining the necessary funds. • Workers’ rights and opportunities by adopting smart infrastructure plans with projects in collaboration with all municipalities. • Reducing the number of cars on East End roads by working with the MTA and all levels of government to get more trains to our area.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know about your campaign?
This is a time of immense division in our county. We must elect leaders who are inclusive and active listeners. If we are to have everyone at the table, we need to go out into communities and speak to residents where they are. I have been to every corner of my district and will continue this after I'm elected. I will ensure that everyone is at the table and has a voice. I will advocate for all residents.
