2026 School Board Elections & Budget Vote

School board elections and budget votes are among the most important local elections because they directly affect children, families, educators, homeowners, and taxpayers. School board members help oversee district budgets, set priorities, approve policies, hire and evaluate superintendents, and make decisions that shape the learning environment for students. The annual budget vote also determines how school districts will fund academic programs, special education services, transportation, facilities, staffing, technology, extracurricular activities, and other essential student supports.

For Black communities and communities of color, these elections are especially important. Representation, equity, school discipline, culturally responsive education, access to advanced coursework, student safety, and resource allocation are all connected to local school governance. Voting in school board elections is one way residents can help ensure that public schools reflect the needs, values, and priorities of the communities they serve.

On May 19th, voters in every school district on Long Island will have the opportunity to vote on the upcoming year’s budget as well as their school board trustees. Check the link to find out what’s on this year’s budget and who’s running for a seat on your school board.
