When in office, what will you do to reduce harm and ensure there is social and economic equity for Black Long Islanders? If you are an incumbent, what policies/initiatives/laws have you supported that do this?
I have been a staunch supporter of affordable and workforce housing initiatives in the City.
My Section 8 office has worked with Georgia Green Ventures, affordable housing developer at Garvies Point to house 17 Section 8 voucher holders, including 5 from the waiting list and 2 with no home.
Under my tenure as Glen Cove IDA Chair, the IDA Board granted a 7 year Pilot Extension to the Fair Housing Development Corporation units on Janet Lane, keeping that historic housing block affordable.
I am currently exploring future affordable and workforce housing projects, including an affordable homeowner project down at the Garvies Point waterfront. Under my tenure as IDA Chairperson, the IDA Board granted sales tax and mortgage recording tax exemptions for that project.
We have commenced a Master Plan planning process including individuals in the Black Community. They are serving on the Core Working group and Comprehensive Planning Committee. The plan is looking at updates to the City’s Inclusionary Housing Code, improvements for transportation and transit, as well as drinking water and environmental issues. This plan is truly comprehensive in nature and will address all topic areas.
We have refurbished a long neglected basketball court on Glen Cove Avenue which has been full of activity since its completion a few months ago.
Plans are currently underway for a playground/park on Austral Avenue.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know about your campaign?
Growing up in Glen Cove, an incredibly diverse community, gives an individual a special understanding of all types of people and allows someone like me to have friends of every race and religion. I have always interacted and worked with with folks of every socioeconomic group giving me an insight as to people’s needs.
